So, figure we'd better make sure this radio actually works. Hellooooo convoy, this is Yang Xiao Long, in the yellow and black muscle car. You all picking this up, or am I just talking to myself here?

The reception's surprisingly good, given the state the vehicles were initially in.

Oh, they do work. Nice. Hey, Akechi, right? You make it through the monster attack all right?
no subject
[He pauses, humming to himself.]
Oh, and I sprouted talons from my hands. Beyond that, I'm as well as I could be under these circumstances.

I read you five-by-five.
[Sorry, but this is kinda cool- in all her life, this is the first time she's ever gotten to use the phrase in its original context.]
no subject
That's a big ten-four.
Glad to hear you made it through in one piece, Faith. Or did you end up with a few new bits?
no subject
[She's still clearly grinning.]
And these new wheels kick ass.
[She realizes some people have a shoddier vehicle than her, but she's got something that's nice and it's hers. That doesn't happen often. The world can just deal.]

[ The exasperated amusement is thick in Blake's voice. ]
Yes, I can hear you. My van has a screen at the front, and a really clunky old phone. How's-- [ There's a small pause as Blake internally debates with herself, and then just grudgingly says the name: ]-- the Wild Rider handling?
no subject
[Yang is grinning so loud Blake can hear it through the radio.]
Yeah, I got a similar set-up in mind. Honestly, the screen looks really out of place in a car this retro.
She's amazing, Blake. Handles like a dream. I can't wait to really put her through her paces.
[Once they stop somewhere with a decent stretch of empty road, Yang is letting her inner speed demon loose.]
What about you, how's the van?
no subject
[ Blake's grudging acceptance does not give away the fact that she's starting to become fond of her campervan. It's the first vehicle she's ever owned. ]
I'm just glad we've got our Scrolls. These phones look like something from the Great War. I think I saw one in a museum once.

[Somebody grew up in the 80s and understood the appeal of CB Radios. He had never had the chance to try one in London. Everything he knew he learned from watching American television when he couldn't sleep-- he never dreamed it would come in handy.]
I'm Waver Velvet, in the van that looks like it went to Woodstock. It's frankly impressive that any of this works.
no subject
[Look at them all, trading trucker lingo like pros. Yang's proud'a ya, Waver.]
Hey Waver, nice to meet you. Another van driver, huh? [So that's at least two vans, counting Blake's. Might not be a bad idea to keep at least an idea of who all is in the Convoy.] For those of us who might be at a dimensional disadvantage here [like Yang.], what's Woodstock?
You're right about that. The cars need a bit of fixing up, but it looks like it's mostly just body work. Wouldn't have expected cars sitting out as long as these look to run so smooth.
no subject
[He heaved a sigh.]
Woodstock was a music festival that a lot of young people who were dissatisfied with the way that the world was going went to. They had their own culture of sharing what they had and working together.
People make fun of the Deadheads-- fans of a band called the Grateful Dead, one of the popular groups at the time, but they had a point.
... They liked vehicles like the one I found because they're fairly easy to keep in good repair without needing a mechanic. If they had a few tools and the part they needed, they could do it in in a parking lot somewhere.

Don't recognize the voice so I'm guessing we didn't bump into each other back at the gas station.

This is R0-GR.

Are you broadcasting from near the convoy?
no subject
Hey, a fellow biker. Good to meet you, Shadow.
Yeah, I'm up near the front. Not sure what the effective range of this radio is just yet.
no subject
I'm near the back.
[ Not the most useful range to have established, but it's a start. ]
We could try to test the range once the convoy moves on tomorrow.

This is Leon on the waves! Coming to you live from the front of the convoy! Cowabunga!
[Fang can probably see him, weaving around on his motorcycle a bit recklessly.]
no subject
Okay, so we still got some work to do on the lingo, but I hear ya.
Loving the enthusiasm my guy, but maybe rein it in a little? Bit early in the trip for risking vehicular crashes.
[Sorry Leo, but you sound young, younger than Yang and the way you're driving, it's setting off alarms in the parental instincts that were drilled into Yang from a young age.]

If we're going to be traveling, it'd be good to to have a form of contact. Leaving someone behind could be...unfortunate.
no subject
Oh, yeah right, with the Persona. Did I get a chance to tell you how really freaking cool that was, by the way?
Bingo. At least it looks like the train goes a pretty even pace. Assuming we did leave someone behind, it wouldn't be hard to catch up or go back for 'em. Guessing that's by design.

Oh! Uh... heeeeey? Did I finally get this on? Can you hear me? I can hear you.

[Yang may be getting a little too into the the trucker lingo.]
Good to meet you. Which car am I currently speaking to?
