Yes. We could possibly already have several different timelines just from the absence of one person, although maybe by that point it wouldn't have made a difference with things being so bad. But we also don't know if fixing things for the future would change events enough that that person would stop existing. Since he's still with us and hasn't simply vanished or something, it probably makes more sense for the split timeline route.
